Session 11: Fever Swamp

The 40th day of Summer in the Dying Lands...

6AM. Zaq's final fuck, marry, kill, mostly revolving around Daniel the townsperson (who keeps referencing "penis strings" and claims he's a virgin). Stile says he'll fuck him later for real, and Daniel accepts. Zaq cartwheels out of view and wishes the Motherfuckers good luck, explaining how he's going to loot the town dry while they explore the swamp. Fredrik, Joy, and Rake stay in town. The party prepares the items they're going to bring with them, as they won't be able to take Blasterace. Captain Roger joins the Motherfuckers. 

Fever Swamp

1PM. The swamp's entrance. The party climbs aboard Captain Roger's raft and floats downstream. 

2PM. Drowned corpses lay still at the bottom of the swamp. Roger gets tracy out and holds his stance, ready to inject at the sign of Hunger. Gorthron brings his joke book out for the first time in what could be a month and tells a joke. It flops. Roger tells a fishing pun and gets a huge hoot from the Motherfuckers.

4PM. Captain Roger swears he sees Hunger. The Motherfuckers distract a pair of leech-covered crocodiles with an extra ration before the reptiles tip the raft.

6PM. The party passes and docks their raft at a ruined monastery. A hive mind of monks, who they learn to be controlled by catfishes secretly attached at their genitals, greets them peacefully. Mistress asks to try a catfish before learning the truth and becomes a part of the hive. Gorthron rescues Mistress under iffy terms of consent. The monks gift the Motherfuckers with some of their treasure: to Roger, a macuahuitl, and to Malachi, a jade statue of Memnon, which he places in his bag of holding. The monks explain that to get to the witch's burial site they'll have to turn left at the gnarled tree.

Catfish Monks

8:30PM. The Motherfuckers settle down at the monastery for the night. Gorthron watch. He views the stilt walkers of Fever Swamp from an open ruin window. Gorthron also hears a witch's shriek.

10:30PM. Stile watch. The monks play a hypothetical game with him of "What would it take for you to kill your friends?"

The 41st day of Summer...

12:30AM. Feyrien watch. 

2:30AM. Everyone wakes up. They relight the lantern and leave the monastery.

3AM. They find a floating corpse of a Western Front soldier, torn in half by some creature. He carries a protected box full of documents detailing King Fathmu IX's secret crusade to find and protect the wishing altar, eventually using it for his own selfish gain. Gorthron, able to read, now knows the forbidden phrase to utter at the altar. 

3:30AM. Relight the lantern. The gnarled tree, with six ancient monk's hanged from its branches. The party turns left on the swamp's flow, and catches the albino ridges of Hunger in the far distance peak above the murky water. 

4:30AM. The Motherfuckers realize a cave they're heading towards is actually the massive exposed nostrils of a sleeping giant underneath the swamp. The giant's grandchildren shout and warn not to steal their treasure or wake Grandfather Rotte. 

6AM. The stone gate marking the entrance to the swamp witch's sepulcher. Roger explains how he has to kill Hunger, and that he'll meet the party here at the entrance after they get their wishes and he gets his kill. Roger dives into the swamp and swims away. The Motherfuckers approach the gate, and a green serpent coiled at the right of it speaks, saying "Let me bite you!"

Session 1: Haum

Motherfuckers Prime, the first campaign in the Dying Lands. A mix of Mörk Borg’s setting, Knave 2e’s rules, and lots of homebrew. Players: Henry Park, James Moutsos, Jill Gotz, and Nico Sweeney. Twisting Demons

Demons can be pretty fun. But I also think the traditional D&D lesser demons and their lore is confusing and I’d rather make up my own. Incorporeality Elric of Melnibone is very cool. In the classic sword & sorcery series he acts as much like a wizard as he does a fighter, conjuring spirits to come to his aid. I’m a big fan of the invisible, intangible, and all-around mysterious nature of the demons. There’s something much more terrifying about ultimate chaotic evil if it can’t be comprehended. This also matches the real-world description of most spirits and demons. They’re often speaking through objects, possessing animals and people, and summoned invisibly in occult ritual. Possession Demon possession! Super super fun. I watched Journey to the West (2013) this month and I thought it was great. Especially loved its treatment of demons.
